La beauté du "Ju Ci" (restauration par agrafes)

The beauty of "Ju Ci" (staple restoration)

Like kintsugi, "ju ci" is also an ancient art of porcelain restoration. Its origins are difficult to trace, but it is estimated that the technique has existed for at least 1,500 years. In the Qing Dynasty, during the time of Emperor Qianlong, "ju ci" was practiced in two forms: "ordinary work" (常活), which used crude iron staples to repair everyday utensils, and "specialized work" (行活), intended for nobles and high dignitaries, which was more refined and gave the restored porcelain a unique aesthetic charm.

Today, "ju ci" has gradually disappeared from daily life, but it is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage, carrying a rich Chinese culture and philosophy - "respect for objects and preservation of fortune". When porcelain breaks, the Chinese often say "碎碎平安" (may it bring peace), expressing both good wishes and attachment to the object. Restoration by "ju ci" is therefore not only an act of repair, but also a manifestation of the traditional spirit of respect for objects.

The restoration steps in "ju ci"

Step 1: Locate and align the fragments
Repair begins with examining and locating cracks, striving to restore the original appearance of the object and preparing for the next steps.

Step 2: Marking the fixing points
Depending on the patterns and shape of the porcelain, the number and location of the staples are determined to ensure a repair that is both aesthetic and stable.

Step 3: Drill the holes
Using a diamond drill bit, holes are drilled on either side of the cracks. This step requires great precision: the holes must be symmetrical and not go through the object. If a hole is inadvertently drilled, it will have to be filled, thus adding additional steps.

Step 4: Installing the Staples
Depending on the size of the object and the extent of the damage, gold, copper or decorative clasps are chosen. Clasps not only add strength to the object, but also give it a distinctive charm.

Step 5: Sealing the cracks
A mixture of egg white and porcelain powder is applied to the repaired areas to ensure the object is watertight. Once this step is completed, the "ju ci" restoration is complete.

The aesthetics of "ju ci"

The beauty of the art of "ju ci" lies not only in its technique, but also in its aesthetics. Craftsmen, through skillful repairs, transform the imperfections of objects into elements of charm, making the "broken beauty" even more touching. This ancient art, which prolongs the life of objects, reveals to us the wisdom and soul buried within them. "Ju ci" conveys a sincere respect for life and objects, embodying the strength of traditional culture.
